Learning Support
Our school places a strong emphasis on meeting the learning needs of all students, and believe with appropriate support every student can reach their God-given potential.
Learning support provides a specialised environment to determine their individual needs and provide strategies to support them.
Learning support is staffed by a qualified learning support teacher, class teachers and teaching assistants who utilise our unique approach to learning to support students in mainstream classrooms.
Townsville Christian College will occasionally develop modified or alternative programs to support students on their educational journey. Individualised learning plans support students through a range of activities both inside and outside the class environment. These may include intervention strategies, support-a-reader and behaviour management programs.
Our team works in close partnership with parents and guardians, assisting them to liaise with relevant professionals, to provide the best quality educational experience for student success.
Creative Arts
The Arts Project
The Arts Project is an extra-curricular program aimed to enhance our students learning experience. The arts helps develop students confidence, self-awareness and reach their full potential. Study in the arts is valuable to all students, and an essential part of a well-rounded educational experience.
Our goal is to expose students to the language of creativity through this innovative and exciting program and help them explore their talents, while nurturing a love and appreciation for the arts.
Through this program the students are provided the opportunity to experience music, drama, dance, media arts, and visual arts. The Arts Project runs weekly during the term and is provided to every student at no additional cost to families.
Private Music Lessons
Students at Townsville Christian College learn to love and appreciate the diversity of music and are empowered to be creative and develop their musical gift. Music is a wonderful expressive force that will help children develop confidence, self-esteem, problem-solving and creative thinking skills. We foster opportunities for students to cultivate positive ways of self-expression and discipline, while learning to collaborate and work as a team.
Music lessons are provided at a small cost to all students who are interested. We provide lessons in piano, drums, acoustic guitar, saxophone, clarinet, violin and vocals.
Sports
At Townsville Christian College, we believe that sports play a pivotal role in moulding a student's character and instilling vital life skills. Our sports program is designed to foster qualities such as commitment, sportsmanship, cooperation, and a deep sense of humility in victory and defeat.
With an outlook that extends beyond school life, our sporting activities aim to nurture a lifelong love for physical fitness. Through regular involvement in sports, students can continue to enjoy the benefits of a healthy and confident lifestyle in their adult years. We create an environment where students are encouraged to support each other, which boosts their self-esteem and helps them to reach their maximum potential.
Our curriculum offers students a plethora of sporting activities to choose from, including swimming, athletics, and a variety of team sports. These activities are integrated into our scheduled health and physical education lessons, our in-house sports programs, and also feature in interschool sporting competitions.
Swimming
Recognising the importance of swimming as an essential life skill and a lifelong sport, we include it as a key component of our sports curriculum. Students from all grades at Townsville Christian College have the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons during terms 1 and 4. These lessons not only equip students with vital swimming techniques but also promise fun and enjoyment that extends beyond the school years.
To bring out the competitive spirit in our students and provide a platform for them to display their swimming prowess, we organize swimming carnivals. These events offer students a dynamic and enjoyable environment to apply their swimming skills while engaging in friendly competition.
House Sport
We uphold the tradition of house sports through three major sporting carnivals each year, featuring swimming, athletics, and cross-country. These events become an integral part of our students' development as they provide invaluable lessons about individual perseverance and team dynamics.
Through these carnivals, students experience the joy of success and learn how to cope with disappointment, building their resilience. They learn the power of collaboration and the essence of being a team player. However, the benefits extend beyond physical fitness and team skills. Being a part of a sporting house, wearing house colours, echoing the war cries, and rallying behind the house mascots all work towards fostering a sense of belonging, camaraderie, and community among our students.
Sport and Physical Education
School day physical activity, PE, and sport contribute to the development of the whole child. By providing children with the opportunity to participate in outdoor extracurricular activities, such as sports, helps them explore and develop skills which are considered beneficial throughout their lives. By participating in 1 hour of sport and 1 hour of physical education classes each week, children are exposed to various mental, social, emotional, physical and educational benefits. Some of these benefits are:
- Developing self-esteem and confidence
- Developing Social skills
- Discipline
- Teamwork
Physical education (PE) provides cognitive content and instruction designed to develop motor skills, game sense knowledge, and behaviors for physical activity and physical fitness and instil confidence to be physically active for a lifetime.
